Lipovitellin Salt Mannitol Agar Base is recommended for selective isolation and identification of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus by detecting lipase production and mannitol fermentation.This medium is also recommended by APHA. Mannitol acts as fermentable carbon source. Phenol red is the pH indicator. Lipovitellin is a lipophosphoprotein present in egg yolk. Lipids from egg yolk emulsion act as substrate for lipase activity. Opaque, yellow zones around the colonies are positive evidence of Lipovitellin + lipase activity (opaque) and mannitol fermentation (yellow).
