Legionella pneumophila is the most common pathogenic species. It may cause a pulmonary disease in humans. Pneumonia occurs more frequently in severely immunosuppressed individuals & is a milder form of the illness. Legionnaire's disease, Pontiac fever and extra-pulmonary infection have been collectively referred to as legionellosis which is a relatively common cause of nosocomial pneumonia in adults. The genes that encode the 5s and 16s ribosomal subunits have been shown to contain signature sequences for identification of L. pneumophila primarily.
