Kanamycin Esculin Azide HiVeg™ Agar Base is recommended for selective isolation and identification of group D Streptococci in foodstuffs. Addition of Kanamycin Sulphate Selective Supplement (FD146) makes media selective. Kanamycin sulphate and sodium azide acts as selective inhibitor. Esculin and ferric ammonium citrate together acts as indicator system to detect esculin - hydrolysing Streptococci forming black zones around the colonies. This medium is prepared by replacing animal peptones with vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE/GMO risk.
