Versene (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or EDTA) is a chelating agent that binds divalent cations such as calcium and magnesium. Chelation of these cations leads Versene can be used as a wash prior to addition of trypsin faster than trypsin or versene alone because versene allows trypsin to hydrolyze specific intercellular peptide bonds and destabilize the intercellular matrix.
