In Gram-negative bacteria, the production of extended spectrum ?-lactamases (ESBLs) represents the most important factor to resistance against ?-lactam antibiotics. These ESBLs have the ability to hydrolyze various antibiotics, including extended-spectrum cephalosporins of the 3rd and 4th generation and monobactams.
