A longstanding diagnostic challenge for fungal infections is to identify an infecting fungal pathogen early in the infection process and rapidly assess its susceptibility to antifungal drugs to facilitate appropriate therapy. In fungal infections, even when positive, results usually take longer than a week because these organisms are difficult to identify and/or are slow-growing.
