MacConkey Broth Purple (Double Strength) w/ BCP is used for the presumptive identification of coliforms from large samples. This medium has Lactose as fermentable carbohydrate source. Bromocresol purple is the pH indicator. Lactose fermentors such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes change the colour of medium from purple to yellow due to the acid production and gas produced is entrapped in Durhams tube as a bubble. Lactose non-fermenting organisms like Salmonella and Shigella do not alter the appearance of the medium.
