Litmus SM Broth is recommended for maintenance of Lactobacilli and for determining the action of bacteria on milk. It is a differential medium often used to determine different metabolic functions that are specific for a particular speciesand helps in bacterial identification. The various metabolic functions are lactose fermentation, litmus reduction, clot formation, peptonization (digestion) and gas fmation. The actions of bacteria can be categorized as Acid reacion, Alkaline reaction and Redox reaction.
