Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. Transmission to humans typically occurs through direct contact with infected animals or humans, or exposure to contaminated materials. Although first identified in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, monkeypox has historically been reported mainly in rural and rainforest regions of Central and West Africa. In recent years, the disease has attracted global attention due to several outbreaks. Notably, a significant outbreak began in 2022, with a marked increase in cases across several countries outside Africa.

By mid‐2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 80,000 cases had been confirmed globally, with a substantial
number of cases occurring in previously non‐endemic regions. As of early September 2024, the WHO reported a total of approximately 95,000 confirmed cases worldwide since the beginning of the 2022 outbreak. The most affected regions include the Americas and Europe, with a notable increase in cases reported in the United States, Brazil, and several European countries. The outbreak has led to several fatalities, though the majority of cases have been mild or moderate.
