Sulfaguanidine is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfonamides block the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. Sulfonamides are competitive inhibitors of bacterial para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is required for bacterial synthesis of folic acid.
