This medium is used for selective isolation and differentiation of coliform organisms and other enteric bacteria from clinical, dairy, food, water, pharmaceutical and industrial sources, Medium has bile salts and crystal violet which inhibits gram positive bacteria, Neutral red is the indicator dye, Escherichia coli and other lactose fermentors appear pink-red coloured and may be surrounded by a zone of acid precipitated bile, Non lactose fermentors Shigella and Salmonella are colourless
