Transferrin is iron binding glycoprotein which serves as a carrier of iron due to the presence of homologous iron binding domains at N-terminal and C-terminal. 80kDa molecule of Transferrin is capable of delivering iron to the cells via process of endocytosis. Besides delivery of iron to cells, transferrin serves an important role in extracellular iron storage and transport. It serves as important extracellular antioxidant as it binds iron under physiological conditions in such a way that no free iron is available to catalyze the production of free radicals.
