The monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1/CCL2) is a member of the C-C chemokine family, and a potent chemotactic factor for monocytes. MCP-1 is produced, either constitutively or after induction by oxidative stress, cytokines, or growth factors by many cell types, including endothelial, fibroblasts, epithelial, smooth muscle, mesangial, astrocytic, monocytic, and microglial cells which are important for antiviral immune responses in the peripheral circulation and in tissues.
