For maltose fermentation studies of microorganisms.

Phenol Red Maltose HiVeg™ Broth is recommended for studying maltose fermentation by the pure cultures of microorganisms. Positive reaction is indicated by the change in colour of medium to yellow due to acid production as indicated by phenol red, a pH indicator in the medium. Gas production is indicated by the bubbles formation and entrapped in Durhams tube. Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella Typhimurium and Proteus vulgaris are known maltose fermentors and gives positive reaction. Salmonella Typhi, Shigella flexneri and Serratia marcescens ferment maltose but do not produce gas. Phenol Red Maltose HiVeg™ Broth is prepared by using vegetable peptones in place of animal based peptones which make the media free of BSE/TSE risks.
