Motility Test Medium (Edwards and Ewing) is recommended for testing motility of enteric bacteria as recommended by BIS committee under the specifications IS:5887(Part I and V)-1976. This medium is formulated as per Edward and Ewing and is recommended by BIS for testing of motility of Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus as per IS:5887(Part I and V)-1976. Motility media containing agar concentrations higher than 0., produce gels through which many motile organisms cannot spread. Motile organisms spread out from the line of inoculation, while non-motile organisms grow only along the stab line.
