Thiosulphate Ringer Solution Powder

Intended Use

Thiosulphate Ringer Solution Powder is used for assessing the cleanliness and sterility of dairy plant after hypochlorite solution has been used for disinfection purpose.

Composition

pH after sterilization: 6.6

Formula adjusted, standardized to suit performance parameters.

Directions

Suspend 2.97 grams of dehydrated powder in 1000 ml distilled water. Heat if necessary to dissolve the medium completely. Sterilize by autoclaving at 15 lbs pressure (121°C) for 15 minutes.

Principle And Interpretation

Thiosulphate Ringer's Solution powder is recommended for assessing the cleanliness and sterility of dairy plant after hypochlorite solution has been used for disinfection purpose (1,2).

Thiosulphate Ringer's Solution is formulated to give 0.05% of Sodium thiosulphite hydrate as per British Pharmacopoeia (3). Ringer's Solution as per B.P. ensures chemical stability without altering the physiological properties of the diluent. Sodium thiosulphite neutralizes residual chlorine present in bacteriological samples and rinses due to the previous use of gaseous chlorine or chlorine containing disinfectants. The thiosulphate neutralizes the bactericidal effect of chlorine in the sample immediately so that subsequent bacteriological examination indicates the pollution of the sample more accurately at the time of collection. Consequently sterile Thiosulphate Ringer solution powder is used for taking rinse water samples from equipment and pipelines etc. for sanitary tests, where a chlorine-containing cleansing fluid has been used.

Appearance: White to cream homogeneous free flowing powder

Colour and Clarity of prepared medium: Colourless clear solution without any precipitate

Reaction: After sterilization, reaction of 0.3% w/v aqueous solution. pH: 6.6

pH: 6.60

Cultural Response: M1337J: Satisfactory results are obtained when used as a diluent during bacteriological examination of immersion cleaned milking equipment and assessing cleanliness and sterility of dairy plant after disinfection.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store below 30°C in tightly closed container and the prepared medium at 2-8°C.Use before expiry date on the label.
