Neutral red is a weakly basic dye used widely as a general stain for histological staining, as a specific stain for Nissl granules of neurons, as a counter stain, and as a pH indicator. In cell culture, neutral red can be used as a vital stain. The uptake of neutral red is directly proportional to the number of viable cells. Viable cells incorporate this dye into their lysosomes. The loss of ability to uptake neutral red corresponds to loss of cell viability.
