Acridine orange is a fluorochrome stain which differentially stains DNA and other cellular structures. It absorbs UV light and emits visible light. DNA is stained yellow green whereas cellular sub-structures including RNA are stained orange. Acridine Orange is used in detection of sister chromatid exchange during karyotyping and in detection of RNA in DNA.
