Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) can form complexes with phenolics and alkaloids. The complex formation allows removal of phenolics and alkaloids from plant samples, thereby inhibiting any modification of proteins by them and any hindrance they may cause in spectrophotometric determinations of protein content.
