Hi-PCR® Extended Spectrum ß-Lactamases (ESBLs) Gene (Multiplex) Probe PCR Kit

In Gram‐negative bacteria, the production of extended spectrum β‐lactamases (ESBLs) represents the most common mechanism of resistance against β‐lactam antibiotics. These ESBLs have the ability to hydrolyze various types of the newer β‐lactam antibiotics, including extended‐spectrum cephalosporins of the 3rd and 4th generation (e.g. cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime) and monobactams (e.g. aztreonam), which were assessed as “critically important antimicrobials” by the World Health Organization (WHO). This has resulted in increased morbidity, mortality, higher cost of treatment and longer hospital stay. The ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae have been marked as a “serious” threat by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC). Definitive diagnosis of patients infected with ESBL producing resistant bacteria is crucial to decide appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Currently, the predominant ESBL gene families encountered are CTX‐M, SHV and OXA‐10/11. Nucleic acid amplification‐based assays or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is an alternative method that allows for sensitive and specific detection of ESBL genes i.e. CTX‐M, SHV and OXA‐10/11 genes from clinical samples / cultured isolates. Real‐Time PCR technique is considerably simple and fast with respect to the standard PCR technique. This technique has been successfully used for the rapid detection and identification of a variety of infectious and non‐infectious pathogens and genes.
