Description

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive intracellular organism causing severe infections that primarily affect pregnant women, newborns and immunocompromised individuals. While Listeria spp. are ubiquitous in nature, only L. monocytogenes is pathogenic to humans. In recent years, a number of outbreaks of food-borne illness involving a wide range of foods have been linked to L. monocytogenes.
