Interleukins are a group of multifunctional cytokines derived from activated lymphocytes and macrophages. Murine Interleukin 3 (IL-3) is globular protein consisting of 135 amino acid residues. It is secreted by T- cells, mast cells and eosinophils. It is a hematopoietic growth factor that promotes survival, differentiation and proliferation of committed progenitor cells of megakaryocytes, granulocytes-macrophage, erythroid, eosinophils, basophils and mast cell lineages. It is a potent growth factor of basophils that acts through specific receptors and mediates adhesion, migration and releasability. IL-3, along with other cytokines exert synergistic effect on cell growth.
