AT171 is RPMI-1640 with 2mM L-Glutamine, 1mM sodium pyruvate, 4.5gms per litre glucose and 10mM HEPES buffer. It does not contain phenol red and sodium bicarbonate. The medium is designed to support growth of both human normal and neoplastic cells in vitro along with wide range of anchorage dependant cells.

RPMI 1640 is the most commonly used medium in the Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) series developed by Moore et al for the culture of human normal and neoplastic cells in vitro. It's a modification of McCoy's 5A medium specifically designed to support the growth of human lymphoblastoid cells in suspension culture. Presently the medium is extensively used for a wide range of anchorage dependant cell lines. The medium is known to support growth of cells both in presence of 5-20% FBS and in absence of FBS.
