Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive intracellular foodborne pathogen, which is known to cause Listeriosis, a type of food poisoning. In infected individuals, listeriosis is characterized by meningitis, encephalitis, septicemi & less commonly, results in cutaneous lesions and flu-like symptoms. A number of molecular and cellular determinants of virulence have been identified for this intracellular pathogen and there is evidence of polymorphism among different strains of L. monocytogenes. Therefore, all strains are considered to be pathogenic. Specific and faster methods for detection of foodborne pathogens, such as Real–time PCR, are the need of an hour. Hi-PCR® Listeria monocytogenes SYBr PCR Kit detects L. monocytogenes in various food sources, cells, environmental and clinical samples
